Harbor History

Often called "the jewel of the Central Coast", Morro Bay is a close knit community known for its strong fishing heritage and unique beauty.

The landmark guardian to the entrance of the Bay, Morro Rock has been a spectacular point on the Central Coast for unknown millenniums. Chumash Indians were the first to cultivate the land and sea near the Rock and its seven volcanic sisters.

The town of Morro Bay grew around the turn of the century as schooners arrived at the Embarcadero to pick up wool, potatoes, barley and dairy products. Over the years strong fisheries developed in shark, salmon, albacore and abalone. Boats back then entered the harbor on both the north and south side of Morro Rock, but captains feared the entrances because of high surf, surging tides and erratic winds.

In 1933 the area was jolted by blasts as a man-made causeway was built closing the north entrance, thereby connecting the Rock with the mainland. The south channel was dredged and a breakwater protecting the entrance was constructed during WW II.

In 1947 the State of California granted trusteeship of Morro Bay tide lands to San Luis Obispo County, excluding the state park marina. When the City of Morro Bay incorporated in 1964 it assumed management of these lands within the city limits.

Today, the City maintains and operates the North and South "T" piers, floating dock and anchorage area. The Morro Bay Yacht Club is the City's official host for transient boaters and is commited to assisting visitors whenever possible through side tie or mooring accommodations. In addition, the City maintains approximately 50 slips and 70 moorings for home ported vessels. Occasionally, these slips and moorings are available for transient use (inquire at the Harbor Office). Use of the City launch ramp at Tidelands Park is free. Fees for all facilities are due in advance. Most other facilities in the harbor are operated privately.
